Kris and Rita were newlyweds at this time.  They were like a couple of kids madly in love.  Kris used to start off his concerts with an apology for his singing voice followed by how lucky the audience was that Rita was there to make him, or at least his songs, sound good.  He loved her voice and referred to it as “smoky”.
